John Dyer's photo book Conjunto which includes essays by Juan Tejeda and Joe Nick Patoski is out now. I'm very proud to be part of this beautiful book. John Dyer has been documenting Texas-Mexican music people for decades; he took the shot of Selena that is on the cover of my book Selena: Como La Flor and has the best selection of photographs of the late Tejano singer. With this effort though, he gets to the heart of the Texas-Mexican music experience--the people who make conjunto music, the most compelling of all folk musics in Texas. Dyer gets the stars and legends such as Santiago and Flaco Jimenez, Valerio Longoria, and Mingo Saldivar while also featuring lesser known (to the Anglo world, at least) talents including George y Maggie, Gilberto Garcia and Ruben Garza of Los Dos Gilbertos, Eva Ybarra, Eddie "Lalo" Torres, Paulino Bernal, and Ricky "Guero Polkas" Davila, the owner and morning DJ on KEDA-AM 1540 Radio Jalapeno in San Antonio, the world's greatest conjunto radio station.

Special 'chout-outs' to Juan Tejeda for his captions and essay--if not for Juan, I'm not sure we'd be discussing conjunto in the present tense as an active, living music--and to my compadre D.J. Stout for designing the book with the knowledge and sensitivity of one who understands the culture well enough to get it right.

Published by University of Texas Press, it's a steal at $19.95
